The play was written during a specific crisis in Tagore’s life, when he was trying to transcend his grief and bereavement by engaging in social activism and artistic creation. This was also the period when he was struggling with poverty and a sense of emptiness that he was experiencing because of his rejection by many of his friends. He sought to find a way out of this emptiness and he found it in the power of his work, and this is what Raja is all about.

Tagore’s characters in the play, Thakurda and Surangama, share his desire to break barriers of comfort. These two characters befriend the king after wading through difficulties and endless sufferings. The king’s reluctance to be seen is what creates most of the drama in the play. The character of the king is also the embodiment of the poet’s persona that seeks to find a relationship with life itself.

This is the first time that the play has been staged in Lucknow and it showcases the significant chapters from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s life. The show is a captivating blend of drama, valour and politics and will be held at Janeshwar Mishra Park until October 31. The Maratha warrior’s story is told with the help of a series of huge reversible sets and props including horses, bullock carts and spectacular fireworks.
